Money 2020 activity

TODAY'S TOP STORIES

1. JPMORGAN TAKES JPM COIN TO ETHEREUM MAINNET

Kinexys has extended JPMD, the bank's dollar deposit token for institutional clients, from Coinbase's Base layer 2 onto Ethereum itself. It launched last November, and Kinexys says the wider platform has handled more than $4 trillion since inception, about $7 billion a day.

So what? This is the most important bank move out of Money20/20 week. A deposit token is a bank liability, not a stablecoin, so it carries deposit insurance logic and bank governance onto a public chain. Going multichain says JPMorgan wants on chain cash where institutional assets and counterparties already sit, rather than waiting for them to come to a permissioned network.

2. VISA AND MESH LET WALLETS SPEND CRYPTO BALANCES AT CARD MERCHANTS

Announced on stage at Money20/20, Mesh will provision a Visa credential behind the scenes inside partner wallet apps, so a holder can tap or check out online from a crypto or stablecoin balance without cashing out first. Mesh handles funding and conversion; the merchant gets an ordinary card payment on existing hardware.

So what? Visa keeps the acceptance side and lets Mesh absorb the crypto conversion, which is the network of networks model applied to digital assets. The platforms named (Kalshi, Tools for Humanity, Félix Pago, MAJORITY, KAST) skip running a card program. The release puts crypto card spend at only about $1.5 billion a month in late 2025, so this is a distribution bet, not proof of demand.

3. STRIPE AND PLASMA BUILD MULTICURRENCY STABLECOIN CARDS

Stripe is widening its stablecoin card stack beyond the dollar, with Plasma as design partner. Supported fiat now covers USD, EUR, BRL, MXN and COP, alongside OUSD and other GENIUS ready coins, in 30+ countries today and a stated goal of 100+ in 2027. Automatic selection of the right balance at checkout is still being built.

So what? Stablecoins are becoming a funding source behind a conventional card transaction, not a replacement for it. Stripe owns issuing, the token and the risk decision, so the card network still clears the purchase while Stripe captures the FX and balance management that banks charge for today.

4. EURONET AND FIREBLOCKS OFFER BANKS WHITE LABEL STABLECOIN CARDS

Euronet is extending its Fireblocks relationship from cross border settlement into issuing. Banks and fintechs on its Ren and CoreCard platforms can launch cards that spend from an embedded Fireblocks wallet, with fiat deposits converted to stablecoin before they land. Euronet cites more than 160 stablecoin linked programs on Visa in the network's fiscal second quarter, with volume up nearly 200% from a year earlier.

So what? This is the processor route to the same outcome as Stripe and Mesh: stablecoin funding, card rails at the front. The difference is the buyer. Euronet is selling to existing bank issuers who want a stablecoin product inside their own app without building custody. No bank client is named yet.

5. JACK HENRY EXTENDS GOOGLE CLOUD TIE-UP TO TOKENIZED DEPOSITS

Jack Henry is deepening its Google Cloud partnership to bring tokenised deposit capabilities to its platform. For community bank clients, this signals that programmable money infrastructure is moving closer to core banking, though no live deployments have been confirmed yet.

So what? The signal here is distribution. Jack Henry's core-banking relationships could put tokenized deposits in front of community banks at scale. But with no named bank live and no volume data, this is a vendor roadmap. The incentive to watch is whether community banks adopt it to defend their deposits against stablecoins. → Source: The Paypers

6. VISA PILOTS AGENTIC B2B PAYMENTS WITH BILL AND BILLTRUST

Visa is running a live pilot with BILL and Billtrust in which AI agents help execute steps in business invoicing and payment workflows, moving agents from recommending a payment to acting on one inside accounts payable and receivable platforms.

So what? B2B is where agentic payments make sense first. BILL and Billtrust already hold the invoice, the approval chain and the vendor relationship, which is the commercial construct consumer agents lack. The open questions are the authorization controls and who carries the liability when an agent pays the wrong invoice.

7. GOOGLE PUSHES UCP AND AP2 AS THE AGENTIC CHECKOUT STANDARD

On stage at Money20/20, Lisa Yokoyama, who runs consumer payments product management for Google Pay and Gemini, positioned the Agent Payments Protocol (September 2025) and the Universal Commerce Protocol (January 2026) as the standards behind interoperable agent shopping and checkout. Google's Universal Cart, which checks out through UCP, went live in the US last week.

So what? Google is now deploying, not just publishing specs. UCP covers discovery, cart and checkout with retailers; AP2 carries the consumer mandate. Neither assigns liability when the mandate is wrong, so issuers and networks still decide whether an agent purchase is approved and who pays for a dispute.

8. WHAT BANKS SHOULD TAKE FROM FINCEN'S BANK OF AMERICA PENALTY

FinCEN's consent order against Bank of America found the bank deliberately calibrated its AML system to reduce investigator workload, allowing vast sums of suspicious activity to go unreported and saving the bank hundreds of millions in compliance costs.

So what? BofA's failure was one of incentives. A monitoring system built because investigators were scarce was then tuned to match headcount rather than risk, and FinCEN now treats the compliance spend that saved as a financial gain. Any payments AML team that sizes alert thresholds to staffing levels is exposed to the same reasoning. → Source: Omeclk Also covered by: American Banker

9. U.S. BANK AND ATOMIC LAUNCH A PAYMENT SWITCH FEATURE

U.S. Bank has partnered with Atomic to bring a payment-switching capability to market, marking a notable move by a major bank to embed fintech-built infrastructure directly into its payments stack.

So what? With no volume, merchant or processor data behind it, this reads as U.S. Bank wanting to be seen owning the moment a consumer switches a payment method. The real test is whether Atomic's switch gets adopted across merchants and payment flows, or stays a feature inside the bank's own app. → Source: The Paypers

10. FINASTRA BUILDS A PLATFORM TO AUTOMATE STANDBY LETTERS OF CREDIT

Finastra has introduced StandbyX, a platform aimed at automating standby letter of credit workflows for US banks. SBLCs have long relied on manual, paper-heavy processes, making this a back-office modernisation play worth watching for adoption signals.

So what? This is a vendor launch with no named bank, volume or go-live date, so we treat it as a product announcement rather than adoption. Finastra's incentive is to sell modernization into a slow, relationship-driven bank back office. Until a US bank goes live on StandbyX, there is no customer signal to score. → Source: The Paypers
