TODAY'S TOP STORIES

A light news day.. I'm in SFO for Stripe Sessions kickoff. Expect a number of announcements mid week.

1. FINTECH LAND GRAB INTENSIFIES

Good article in PYMNTS as they outline how a wave of fintech M&A is creating integrated platforms: lenders, payment processors, and embedded finance stacks consolidating to compete with legacy banks. Platforms now own end-to-end: origination, payment rail, settlement, and customer relationship.

So what? I'm not on board here at all. With the waves of layoffs, and the cost of "code" the only thing that Platforms will be buying is footprint. I see more strategic collaboration (ex WMT and Google) than I do M&A. The big change I see in platforms is the "federated" vs integrated approach.

2. CPGs standardize product data for agentic - COLGATE-PALMOLIVE

Colgate-Palmolive has begun syndication of its product data (descriptions, images, attributes) to multiple retailers' ecommerce platforms. This reduces merchant workload and improves product discovery. Early reports show improved conversion on product pages.

So what? When product data is syndicated (not siloed on each merchant site), AI agents can reliably identify and order products across multiple sellers. Without clean, standardized product data, agents will continue to struggle with product matching. Colgate's move suggests major FMCG brands see this data standardization as table-stakes for agent readiness. Watch for similar moves from P&G, Unilever, and Nestlé. This is the unsexy infrastructure play that enables the agentic checkout flow.

Topics from People I Follow 📬

  • Fraud decision-making & chargeback guarantees — Email from Dwayne Gefferie (Payments Strategy Breakdown) on merchant fraud thresholds, vendor risk transfer, and vertical-specific false-decline rates. Key point: Riskified's gross margin optimization is tightening approval rates in travel/tickets (higher-risk, lower-margin verticals), showing how vendor incentives, not just models, drive real-world merchant experience.

REGULATORY RADAR 🏛️

Banking Circle Introduces Stablecoin Settlement Services Following CAS Approval. EU's Crypto Asset Regulation (CAS) created a legal pathway for stablecoin settlement; Banking Circle is among the first to build operational services around it. Signals: European banks are moving past stablecoin skepticism into execution.

ON THE HORIZON 📅

  • VAMP Excessive Tier exposure: For merchants with 8+ chargebacks per 1,000 transactions, Visa's post-April 1 fraud-coded chargeback rule (counts twice: once as TC40, once as TC15) means fraud costs are now $8+ per chargeback event, not $4–5. Merchants in high-fraud verticals (travel, iGaming, digital goods) should be stress-testing reserve adequacy now.
  • Agent payment flows: Expect Visa, Mastercard, and Stripe to announce agentic commerce payment standards/specs in Q2. Watch for clarity on: pre-auth vs. post-auth models, reversibility windows, and customer notification requirements.
  • India's device-bound credential rollout: RBI guidance on biometric + device binding could accelerate global convergence on FIDO2/passkeys. This is infrastructure momentum worth tracking for US PAZE timeline.
