1. RETAILERS ARE RUSHING TO BUILD AI APPS. IT'S UNCLEAR IF SHOPPERS WILL USE THEM

Major retailers (Kohl's, Target, Walmart, Amazon) are deploying AI-powered shopping assistants, gift finders, and search tools. Early adoption is racing ahead despite unclear consumer adoption metrics and ROI justification.

So what? Retailers are betting that AI agents will shift customer behavior away from search toward conversation and recommendation. For payments, this matters because it changes discovery and checkout sequences—agents may funnel purchases through new pathways with different acquirer relationships. The bet is on agent-led commerce becoming mainstream; if it doesn't, this is sunk cost. Acquisition costs and payment processing patterns will shift for retailers who successfully transition users to agent-based shopping.

2. STRIPE BRINGS MERCHANT CHECKOUT TO GOOGLE'S AI SHOPPING ASSISTANT

Stripe has integrated merchant checkout directly into Google's AI shopping assistant, allowing agents to complete purchases without leaving the conversation. This marks a milestone in agentic commerce infrastructure where payment execution is embedded within agent workflows rather than as a separate step.

So what? Stripe merchants can use ACP to checkout with Google (within the Google UCP embedded C/O CX. Makes sense to me. Stripe enhances all the fraud data and Google passes some kind of Agent trust and consumer ID score.

3. US REAL-TIME PAYMENTS HIT HIGH-GROWTH PHASE AS USE CASES MULTIPLY

Interesting Article in PYMNTs on growth for RTP. One bank CEO told me "Tom I want to move all ACH to RTP, making it invisisble to the merchants and businesses that use it, the complexity of managing multiple settlement accounts is extreme". Payment Geeks shoudl not look at this progress as demand driven as much as operational. Identifying the DRIVER of RTP is very important.

4. LIVE-SHOPPING PLATFORM WHATNOT TAPS SHOPIFY TO REACH MILLIONS OF MERCHANTS

Great read on SMBs in agentic. Whatnot, a live-shopping platform, integrated with Shopify to offer streaming commerce to Shopify's merchant base. This allows Whatnot to scale live-shopping SMB reach while Shopify adds a new channel for merchants.

5. EUROPE MOVES TO BREAK VISA AND MASTERCARD'S GRIP — BUT NOT EVERYONE AGREES

ECBs centralized Digital Wero push angers banks and competing schemes including Wero (pan-European real-time payments), eIDAS interoperability standards, and merchant routing flexibility. However, some banks and retailers argue rapid transition carries operational risk.

6. VISA QUIETLY BUILDING STABLECOINS INTO MAINSTREAM PAYMENT PLUMBING

Visa has integrated stablecoin settlement rails into its infrastructure, adding 5 blockchains for stablecoin settlement (Ethereum, Polygon, Solana, Base, others). Visa's move signals confidence that stablecoin settlement will become a material part of payment infrastructure.

So what? Rather than fighting stablecoins, Visa is embedding them—capturing upside if they scale while preserving Visa's position as settlement infrastructure provider regardless of rails. This is strategic optionality: if USDC becomes preferred for B2B or merchant payouts, Visa still owns settlement. Net result: Visa maintains relevance in multiple infrastructure futures.

7. MASTERCARD SEES DATA MOVING PAYMENTS FROM KYC TO KYA

Mastercard is positioning payment verification around "Know Your Agent" (KYA)—using transaction data and behavioral patterns to authenticate agentic commerce flows.

Tom's take? Give my blog yesterday, this is not where I see it going. MA's Comms group must have taken a seat with the product team. Networks must authenticate the consumer, the credential, the actor/agent and the action (ie intent or payment). Simplifying this to "KYA" is just silly.

Versana raised $43M (BNP Paribas led, with Fitch Ventures) — digital infrastructure platform for syndicated loans and private credit markets. Relevant angle: loan market digitisation is upstream of embedded lending and B2B payments infrastructure.
