TODAY'S TOP STORIES
1. GOOGLE, AFFIRM & KLARNA POWER BNPL FOR AI AGENTS
Google has wired Affirm and Klarna's buy-now-pay-later offerings directly into its AI Mode and Gemini app, letting AI agents finalize purchases with flexible payment options via Google Pay. Both integrations follow Google and Shopify's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), a open standard for agentic checkout.
So what? BNPL is hot. In my CMO discussions it was a #1 or #2 payment priority. Why? because BNPL drives incremental sales and provides a card alternative to merchants. One CMO said "BNPL providers are the only ones that realize payments are not a 'one and done' thing, they need to be optimized by campaign".

2. AMAZON REPLACES RUFUS WITH ALEXA FOR SHOPPING, EXPANDING TO VOICE & MULTI-DEVICE
Amazon has sunset its Rufus shopping assistant in favor of a broader "Alexa for Shopping" agent designed to automate the entire discovery-and-purchase journey across Amazon, third-party merchants, and external retailers via voice, mobile, and Echo Show. The shift signals Amazon moving from a Q&A bot to a fully transactional agent.
So what? Rufus was assistant; Alexa for Shopping is agent with checkout authority. By making it available on Echo Show, Amazon is capturing the moment when customers ask for what they want and the agent decides where to buy (not just what to recommend). For payments, this means Amazon's One-Click must now compete against Affirm, PayPal, and third-party checkout systems. The advantage: Amazon owns the customer relationship and their voice, which is harder to disintermediate than a search result.

3. ADYEN PURSUES US EXPANSION AS GLOBAL PAYMENTS INFRASTRUCTURE CONSOLIDATES
Adyen has announced plans to deepen its US presence, signaling confidence in merchant demand for unified payment infrastructure. As a tier-1 processor competing on APIs and integration depth rather than network fees, Adyen's move targets mid-market merchants hungry for rate relief and technical flexibility.
So what? Adyen has done a great job on enterprise, but they have underinvested compared to Stripe. Lets see if they can make this work.

5. BLOCK ECOSYSTEM REACHES 1 MILLION BITCOIN-ENABLED MERCHANTS
Square has announced that its Bitcoin-acceptance offering now powers over 1 million merchant locations, a milestone that signals real adoption (not just tech evangelism) of cryptocurrency as a settlement option. The growth comes as Block continues to develop its broader economic OS, including Cash App, Square, Spiral, and mining operations.
So what? This is a settlement-layer story, not a payments story. Block isn't saying 1 million merchants accept Bitcoin from customers; it's saying 1 million can receive Bitcoin as settlement if they choose. The incentive: merchants get exposure to upside without forced hodl risk (immediate conversion). For Block, 1M merchants is the proof point for the economic OS—a platform where fiat, crypto, and data flow together. The risk: Bitcoin's volatility and regulatory uncertainty make this a long-tail play. Mainstream adoption still requires stablecoin rails and central bank digital currencies (CBDCs).

6. JAPAN BLOCKCHAIN FOUNDATION LAUNCHES YEN-PEGGED STABLECOIN FOR B2B SETTLEMENT
The Japan Blockchain Foundation has announced EJPY, a yen-pegged stablecoin designed for cross-border B2B payments and settlement. The move reflects growing appetite for CBDC alternatives that bypass traditional banking rails, particularly for treasury and FX operations.
So what? EJPY is a private stablecoin addressing the speed gap between SWIFT and real-time rails. Japan is a key test market: high trust in local financial institutions, mature banking infrastructure, and strong demand for cross-border efficiency (especially Korea, China, Southeast Asia). EJPY's success depends on merchant and bank adoption—if it stays limited to blockchain enthusiasts, it's a niche tool. The real incentive shift happens when JPMorgan Chase or Sumitomo Mitsui backs a similar rail and tells their clients to use it. That's when tradition banking has to compete on settlement speed, not just brands.

7. AMAZON NOW LAUNCHES 30-MINUTE DELIVERY IN US, SCALING QUICK-COMMERCE LOGISTICS
Amazon is expanding its Amazon Now service across the US, positioning the company to compete directly with Instacart, Wonder, and other quick-commerce players. The move tests whether Amazon can use its logistics advantage to own the last-mile impulse buy.

Alibaba has integrated its Qwen large language model across Taobao and Tmall, enabling AI-driven product discovery and checkout for hundreds of millions of Chinese consumers. The move demonstrates that agentic commerce is already operational in mature markets outside the US. Reuters
